SAE International statement on official Formula SAE/Formula Student Competitions

Following our recent announcement that Formula Student Germany has become an official part of the Formula SAE Series we've been asked "What makes a competition "official"?"   Official Formula competitions have signed agreements to use the FSAE Rules, procedures and policies and they are organized by professional societies dedicated to advancing engineering education or by recognized non-profit organizations.  The official competitions agreed to work together to ensure their competitions are run to the same standards so that participating universities will know what to expect.  The 7 official competitions of the Formula SAE Series are: Formula SAE Australasia, Formula SAE Brasil, Formula SAE California, Formula SAE Italy, Formula SAE Michigan, Formula Student (UK) and Formula Student Germany.   The professional societies that are in agreement on these competitions are ATA, IMechE, SAE Australasia, SAE Brazil, VDI and SAE International.

Recently some unofficial competitions using the FSAE Rules and referencing the competitions of the Formula SAE Series have been announced.  We cannot make any statements about the objectives, procedures or safety of such competitions.  However, we can say that none of them are part of the official Formula SAE Series, none of them are represented on the FSAE Rules Committee, none of them are supported by any of the official organizing institutions and none of them have been granted permission to use the FSAE Rules or the names Formula SAE or Formula Student in the promotion of their events.

We remind all teams that FSAE vehicles are intended only for operation in the events defined in the rules, which specifically prohibit wheel-to-wheel racing.  The competitions of the Formula SAE Series are engineering design challenges and should not be treated as purely motorsports events.  Thinking otherwise is dangerous.  Teams that participate in any competition outside the Formula SAE Series with  specification built FSAE vehicles do so at their own risk.
